These two nights of training will give participants the skills necessary to learn when medical assistance is needed, how to perform first aid, Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and first aid as well as how to use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), device for restoring an effective heart beat. There will be an exam which if passed will give you the American Heart Association certification.

Emergency preparedness begins at home. This training presented by Dawn Sibor provides simple steps that individuals and families can take to prepare for most emergencies, including preparing to "shelter in place”; developing an evacuation kit; and making a family communication plan.

Back by popular demand is Alfred DeMaria,Jr, MD, Medical Director MA Department of Public Health, Bureau of Infectious Disease Prevention, Response and Services. Dr. DeMaria will discuss hot public health topics of the day that are interesting and important to MRC volunteers. He will talk about the 2011-2012 influenza season, the upcoming summer season and will review lessons learned from recent experiences. Dr. DeMaria’s presentations are always interesting and engaging.

This training will prepare CERT and MRC volunteers to effectively manage a shelter for people displaced by a disaster. The training will: describe procedures for opening, operating and closing shelters; discuss the various job assignment/roles for volunteers and ways to provide quality service, explain local and regional resources and how to access them; and highlight the partnership between the American Red Cross and Brookline Citizen Corp programs (CERT/MRC) in running a local shelter.
